motivates us?
Motivation is a topic that we all struggle with. Motivation to stay with
our exercise regimen, motivation to eat less, and motivation for everything
else in life for that matter.

Exercising – it’s NOT For the Birds!
by Carol Frank
How many of you wake up early and say to yourself ”Oh boy, now
I get to get up and exercise. Yippeee!!!” But, being the disciplined
soul that you are, you drag yourself out of bed, strap on your running
or workout shoes, and high-tail it out the door and into exercise-land.
Forty-five minutes later, you are out of breath, high on endorphins, and
oh-so-thrilled that you didn’t keep hitting the snooze button. If
you were depressed when you awoke, you are now feeling positive. If you
were tired, you have energy. If your head was clogged with worries, it
is now clear. Oh the magic of exercise!
I call my daily exercise routine “the drug of choice,” because,
without it, I doubt I would have survived the horrific experience of having
my much larger competitor sue me and my bird-cage company, Avian Adventures,
for the sole purpose of putting us out of business. For three years I
battled this lawsuit, watched my sales plunge into oblivion, and lived
in daily fear of bankruptcy. When the dust finally settled and I had my
company back on track, I can honestly say that my commitment to fitness
is one of the main reasons I kept my sanity intact.
Fighting, and ultimately surviving, the daily battles of running a successful
business definitely can take a toll on a person’s physical and emotional
health. How does one get through these tough times? After interviewing
dozens of America’s most successful entrepreneurs for my book
“Do
as I Say, Not as I Did: Gaining Wisdom in Business through the Mistakes
of Highly Successful People”, I determined that our ability
to successfully bounce back depended on some universal ingredients that
all business people should have in their lives, one of the most important
being a consistent exercise routine.
Living a healthy, well-balanced life proves invaluable when dealing with
prolonged stress. What are the activities that, when the chips are really
down, can keep you moving, motivated, and give you an avenue to vent your
frustrations? Running, tennis, cycling, swimming? People with healthy
lifestyles and outlooks are more stress-resilient and are able to bounce
back from adversity. According to the American Medical Association, working
out reduces depression because of the increased sense of physical and
emotional well-being associated with aerobic activity.
